PARENTS...
No...i am not gonna blog abt my parents. this is for the parents who are going to bring or have already brought their child for op before.
Being an insider, i know what happens on the background of surgeries. working with childern have it's perks. pt's are smaller in size, thus easire to carry. they are usually super cute too n the list goes on. thru the 1 and a half year tt i have been working, the only thing tt i probably dislike the most is being the receptionist. Having to face parents who are worried (which is natural) and children who cry non-stop. then there are the parents who keep peeking in whenever the door opens n give us tt kind of stare.
I have had my fare share of parents who ask for the impossible. For example: the op is due at 10am, but due to unforseen circumatances, it has been delayed. it could be due to many factors(like the dr. is late or the is complication tt happened before, during or after the op or tt the previous kidhave tiny veins n blah blah blah...). so the timing now is 10:10am, parent comes out to ask when is their child going in for the op. we the poor receptionist have to keep apologising and call into the OT to find out the situation inside. another 10 mins passed by and now the parents brings the crying child out, demanding for an explanation for the delay n starts asking for the names of the pple involved. like the receptionist can do anything to help u. then they demand tt the child be fed, coz he/she is crying. we then go on to explain tt we/they cannot feed the child, if not there will be further delay in the op time.
Why do we have to go thru all these explaining when the parents refuse to take what we say for real. they always will only cease their fury when a dr. appears to do the explanation. then let the dr.'s be the receptionist! parents, parents, lets take a moment to think. why do we set a time for the kid to fast? coz if they don't, the food that they consume after the fasting time will come out from their stomach n go into your kid's lungs, thus causing further complication. i am sure tt u don't want tt to happen to ur child right! :) Why is there a time set for ur kid's op? coz it is the clinic staff tt helped the dr. schedule for ur kid's op. whatever happenens on tt day, we cannot control. you yourself should know better tt children are difficlt to handle at times. and i am sure tt we have already told you tt the timing is only an estimated time, so pls don't blame us for the delay, juz try n control ur child. It doesn't help tt u keep pacing up and down infront of us, coz it doesn't make the previous op end faster nor does it make us more fearful of u. there is no use in bringing your crying child out to threathen us, coz we can already hear your child's cry even b4 u brought him/her out.
We would love to help you, but ther is only so much we can do for you. Tust me...it is true. imagine if it were u going for the op, n try to see things from our point of view. we too always try to see things frm ur point of view. So when both parties have lower expectations and allow some leaway(i mean in terms of time n not the quality of our work), we can help your child have a rather smooth progress in the OT.
